Soccer’s world governing body has launched its national volunteer programme for its upcoming Women’s World Cup tournaments in Canada over the next two years
The volunteer drive for 2015’s Fifa Women’s World Cup and next year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup took place during the official host city workshop at Parliament Hill in the Canadian capital Ottawa.
Fifa said the two events would require thousands of volunteers between them. The first of the double-header, for U-20 players, is scheduled for 5-24 August 2014.
Speaking at the launch, Canadian Minister of State for Sport Bal Gosal urged Canadians all over the world to volunteer and “help show the world our passion for sport”.
He added: “Our government is pleased to support these major international events. From coast to coast, we have a unique opportunity to showcase to the world Canadian hospitality and cultural diversity through these two important women’s sporting events, which will also result in many economic benefits.”
In his own remarks, Victor Montagliani, chair of the local organising committee for the two events, said: “As part of the team helping to deliver these two world-class competitions, volunteers will play an important role in establishing a meaningful legacy for sport and women’s soccer in Canada.”
According to Montagliani, Canada would find it “impossible to stage this event without the effort and passion of those committed to volunteering”.
Volunteering is open to people from all background anywhere in the world. In a statement, Fifa urged anyone thinking of volunteering to apply immediately to be part of these “groundbreaking” tournaments.
“Those who volunteer in 2014 will help ensure a high level of excellence by developing into volunteer leaders and creating momentum for the larger event, the Fifa Women’s World Cup Canada 2015,” Fifa said.
“Volunteers will be needed in Edmonton, Alberta; Toronto, Ontario; Montréal, Québec; and Moncton, New Brunswick for the Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014, with additional volunteers needed in Vancouver, British Columbia; Edmonton, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Ottawa, Ontario; Montreal, Québec; and Moncton, New Brunswick in 2015.”
