Eleven-year-old Boniface Odoemene has told Metro Eireann of his delight at scooping the player of the season award at his Balinteer-based club Broadford Rovers, in what is just his second season with the team.
Odoemene, who plays for the club’s under-12s side, said: “I’m so happy about it. I was really surprised when they gave it to me.”
He may have been caught by surprise when he was given the award, but Odoemene was something of a shoo-in after slotting home 18 goals to take the team’s golden boot.
The young goal machine, who is originally from Nigeria but who has spend nearly 10 of his 11 years in Ireland, said that it wasn’t the first piece of silverware he has taken home this season. “We won the South Dublin Cup this season as well,” added the striker.
The award was presented during a ceremony at the club last week. Odoemene’s father Albert, who was overjoyed at his son’s achievements, said: “He did really well to win the award.
“It’s all the more important this season because his team have had such a good year with winning the cup. We’re really proud of him.”
