Bohs look for young talent

Last update - Thursday, June 25, 2009, 16:11 By Metro Éireann

Current League of Ireland champions and FAI Cup holders Bohemian FC are looking for new soccer talent – and your children may be just who they want.

Bohs are rebuilding their youth teams, particularly targeting under-10s. Trials for these and other age groups will run from Wednesday 1 July to Sunday 12 July at the DCU sports grounds off Ballymun Road.
“We want to build a viable youth team system and we cannot do that unless we have lots of players in the under-7 and under-8 categories,” explained Robbie Loughlin, youth director with Bohemian FC.
Bohs had a total of 15 youth teams in various leagues last season,  from under-7 to under-18. But for the season starting in August, Loughlin aims to have more teams and perhaps as many as ten teams in the under-7 to under-10 categories.
As part of a major effort to revitalise Bohs’ youth team structures, Loughlin has a new committee to work with, who are actively looking for new coaches to work with youth teams, especially in the youngest age groups.
“We’re heading in the right direction,” said Loughlin. “Four of our teams gained promotion to higher leagues in the season just finished. Three of those were in age groups below ten years of age.”
League of Ireland clubs have not been as successful in maintaining schoolboy/girl league teams as clubs dedicated to junior football. But Bohs are aiming to change that, making good use of the excellent training facilities they have at DCU’s sports grounds.
Trials for boys and girls in all age groups will take place at the DCU grounds on the following schedule:
l Under-7 to Under-10: Wednesday 1 July (6.30pm–
8pm); Monday 6 July (6.30pm–8pm); Thursday 9 July (6pm–8pm)
l Under-11 to Under-14: Thursday 2 July (6.30pm–
8pm); Tuesday 7 July (6.30pm–8pm); Thursday 9th July (6pm–8pm)
l Under-15 to Under-18: Friday 10 July (6.30pm – 8pm); Sunday 12 July (2pm–4pm)
Children are asked to bring their gear, boots and water and they must wear shin guards. Parents should check www.bohemians.ie for full details and any late changes, and to pre-register their children.
