A new art exhibition in Germany showcases the talents of Irish artists who have made the German capital their new home.
Contemporary Ireland: Neither Here Nor There runs till 5 May at the Grimmuseum and features the work of some of the many artists who have relocated to Germany over the past 20 years to take advantage of the national pride in culture and the vibrancy of its cities’ arts scenes, particularly in Berlin.
The German capital is a popular destination for Irish expats, with some 1,700 residing in the city, availing of the low cost of living to follow their dreams as musicians or artists.
Despite this, as the title suggests, Irish artists often feel caught between two different worlds. As such, the ten participating in this exhibition have each selected a piece to show a new way of understanding their own history, culture and tradition.
The show, supported by the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin and Culture Ireland via the EU presidency fund, is intended to celebrate and highlight the diverse cultural impact of these Irish artists living in Berlin.
Together with the exhibition is a programme of weekly events including performances, readings, screenings and discussions about Irish culture in Berlin.
Irish immigrants featured in the show are Mark Curran, Benji De Burca, Maurice Doherty, David Hedderman, Jane Hughes, Sophie Iremonger, Eoin Llewllyn, Lifeloop, Enda O’Donoghue and David O’Kane.
After its stint in Berlin, the exhibition will move to Ireland later this year for a show at the Galway Arts Centre in December.
