Basketball Ireland launches ‘Summer Jam’

Last update - Thursday, July 12, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

Basketball players are wanted for a new mixed tournament kicking off this summer, which will see heats played all over the country in aid of helping integration.

Basketball Ireland’s ‘Summer Jam’ event, sponsored by the National Action Plan Against Racism (NPAR), is open to anyone who wants to take part, with the proviso that teams are made up of both men and women and of people from more than one country.

The tournament, which is also open to children, tips off on 21 July and will run throughout August at a host of venues around the country.

Basketball Ireland spokes-person Fran Burke said: “[Summer Jam] will place members of different cultures on the same team where they will work together towards a common goal. Basketball is the perfect medium to promote cross-cultural relationships and understanding.”

The event will take place at seven regional sites spread throughout Ireland, and will be split over two divisions, under-18 and senior. The top two teams from each region advance to play in the final tournament at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin on 19 August.

Those interested in taking part in the Summer Jam event, which offers a cash prize for the winners, can enter the tournament as a team with a maximum of four members, or on an individual basis.

Registration fees are 30 euro per team (up to 4 players), 10 euro for free agents, and 5 euro for youths.
