APPLICATIONS for the new version of the Irish travel document are now being accepted. A travel document assists qualifying non-Irish nationals who are resident in the State to travel, but the type of travel document issued will depend on the specific personal circumstances of the applicant.
The State is obliged to issue travel documents to persons granted protection in Ireland, such as refugees and those granted subsidiary protection.
Persons wishing to apply for a travel document must complete an application form, have it endorsed by a garda and then send that completed form to the Travel Document Unit at the Irish Immigration and Naturalisation Service (INIS).
Applications take approximately four to six weeks to process and the form must be accompanied by a fee of €80 payable by postal order/bank draft only; four passport size photographs; a copy of a current Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) registration card; and an existing travel document in the event that their existing one is full or expired.
Holders of Irish travel documents issued under the 1951 Geneva Convention do not require an Irish re-entry visa to re-enter the State, but a visa may be required to enter some other countries.
