The Anti Racist Network Ireland (ARN) launched the first issue of its new journal at an event in Dublin recently.

The ARN Public Journal aims to highlight experiences and ideas among Ireland’s immigrant communities, as well as feature the activities of ARN members and promote the anti-racist and anti-discriminatory agenda of the network.

Vanessa Stout, a principle organiser of the journal, said the initiative began with an idea from ARN member Luke Buka to bring together the immigrant experience and the work of ARN in a centralised format via the written word.

She added that the organisers decided to avoid the peer review model and limit editorial oversight for the journal in order to encourage those who might not contribute for fear of rejection.

“Political ideas need to be discussed and aired, not checked and edited by experts,” said Stout, who explained that the journal team expect most contributors will be from non-academic backgrounds.

“The journal is our model of owning ideas and disseminating them,” reads the inaugural editorial. “Politically and ideologically, we hope to bring the idea of a university without walls into the public domain.”

The ARN Public Journal will be published three times annually and contributors will be invited by calls via social network sites, e-mail campaigns and word of mouth.

Copies of the first issue are available by contacting antiracismireland@gmail.com.
