A SERIES OF short documentaries produced by migrant domestic workers in Ireland will be screened tonight (Thursday 29 April) in Dublin.
Hidden Voices: Stories from Behind Closed Doors is part of an action week by the Domestic Workers Action Group (DWAG) at the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) from 26 April to 1 May.
In the run-up to May Day, the DWAG is underlining a series of measures it wants undertaken, including a campaign of inspections in the domestic sector by the National Employment Rights Authority; a protocol for the protection of domestic workers employed in diplomatic households endorsed by the Department of Foreign Affairs; Government support for an International Labour Organi-sation Convention on Domestic Work in 2011; and the establishment of a Joint Labour Committee to set out legal minimum standards for the sector.
The DWAG is also staging a photography exhibition until 1 May at Siptu headquarters, Trinity College’s Buttery Cafe and Dublin City Council with images showing the value of domestic work on display, and will participate in this year’s May Day rally leaving from the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin at 2pm on Saturday 1 May.
Tonight’s screenings take place at My City Wall Space at the DCC Civic Offices, Dublin 8, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Meanwhile, the DWAG and Trinity College will host a seminar on domestic workers on 30 April.
The event is presented by the Trinity Immigration Initiative in association with the MPhil in Ethnic and Racial Studies and hosted by Hilda Regaspi of the DWAG, and takes place at Seminar Room 3 from 1pm–3pm.
